Subramanya Bharathi (1882-1921) was a Tamil writer, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist and social reformer, popularly known as Mahakavi Bharathiyar. He is a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry. On December 11, 2012 his 130th birth anniversary was celebrated.

He published his first two collections of poems Swades, Gitanga and Janmabhoomi in 1908.
